SparcStation 1+

This old machine came with 28 MB of memory and a dead NVRAM, but that was fixed with the help of the Sun NVRAM/hostid FAQ and 28 Euros for a new NVRAM. Then I wanted to install NetBSD 1.6.1 on it, but the machine refused to boot from the CD. It had no problems with the Debian 3.0r2 CD though, so that is what is on the HD now. Recently I tried to upgrade it to Sarge and a 2.6.12 kernel with the help of these directions, but although kernel 2.4.27 installed fine, libc6 keeps bombing out. I guess Woody with a 2.4.27 kernel (and sunlance added to /etc/modules to activate the network during bootup) is the end of the line for this ancient beast.

The usability of this computer whith its beautiful pizzabox design is probably zero nowadays, except for whiling the time away on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Maybe running a little webserver with static HTML on it for nostalgic reasons, or a simple mail or DNS server..
